2016 CVC Player of the Week

 

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - APRIL 4
Landon Shorts, Stevenson University

Landon Shorts stepped up when his team needed it, leading the Mustangs to a win over Eastern Mennonite University and securing his team's first place finish in the Continental Volleyball Conference regular season. Shorts pounded down 18 kills in the four set match, with just two errors on 23 attempts. Shorts was just as adept on defense, finishing with five digs and one block. He finished with an average of 4.5 kills and 1.25 digs per set while hitting .696 on the week. Shorts and the Mustangs finished the CVC regular season with an 11-1 record and will host the upcoming CVC Tournament this weekend.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 28
Cody Chidsey, Rutgers University-Newark

Cody Chidsey, the reigning CVC Player of the Year, picked the perfect time to earn his first Player of the Week award for the 2016 season. Chidsey powered his team to a pair of conference wins last week, including a win over #7 ranked Stevenson, who was undefeated in conference play entering the match. Chidsey put down five kills on just seven attempts in a sweep of Cairn, adding two blocks. He was just as unstoppable in his team's sweep of Stevenson, finishing with 10 kills on just 11 swings and adding four blocks. He finished the week hitting .778 with 15 kills, four digs, and six total blocks; averaging 3.1 points per set.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 21
Travis Abele, Eastern Mennonite University

Travis Abele, a freshman from Mechanicsville, Va., is this week's Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week. Abele, an outside hitter, led the Royals to three wins last week including his program's first ever win against Juniata College. Abele finished with 15 kills in a 3-1 win over Juniata, the Royals first win in 24 years against the Eagles. He added three service aces and six digs in the match. Abele followed with eight kills on just 11 attempts in a sweep of Thiel, adding three block assists. On the week Abele hit .386, averaging 2.50 kills and 3.3 points per set. He finished with 25 kills, 17 digs, and 10 blocks in three matches on the week.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 14
Patrick Schuyler, Stevenson University

Patrick Schuyler picks up this week's Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week award after leading his team to four wins including wins over three ranked teams. Schuyler hit .306 on the week, putting down 65 kills in five matches. He toatled 16 kills against #11 Mount St. Joseph, hitting .500 in the match, while adding six digs. He followed with 15 kills in a win over Wittenberg and added another 13 kills against #15 NYU. Schuyler tallied his fourth double digit kill match of the week, with 12, in a loss to #3 Carthage before closing out the week with nine kills against #10 MSOE. Schuyler averaged 3.7 points per set, adding 29 digs over five matches and finishing with 73.5 points on the week.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 7
Christian Taylor, Eastern Mennonite University

Christian Taylor is the Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week after averaging 12.29 assists per match last week. Taylor, a freshman from Richmond, Va., helped his team split a pair of conference matches. Taylor finished with 34 assists in a sweep of Cairn, with the Royals attack hitting .293 in the match. Taylor then tallied 52 assists in a four set match against Rutgers-Newark with his team again hitting well above their season average at a .261 mark. Taylor is currently third in the conference in assists at 10.14 per set.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - FEBRUARY 29
Corey Pieper, Rutgers University-Newark

Corey Pieper becomes the first repeat Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week this season, winning each of the last two weeks. Pieper, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, helped the Scarlet Raiders to a pair of conference wins last weekend, defeating #15 Juniata and Thiel. Pieper put down double digit kills in both matches, tallying 10 against Juniata and 12 against Thiel. He finished the week hitting .391 with 22 kills on 46 attempts with only four errors. In addition Pieper recorded four service aces, two in each match, and added six total blocks and four digs. He averaged 4.8 points per match. Pieper and the Scarlet Raiders have now won eight consecutive matches.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - FEBRUARY 22
Corey Pieper, Rutgers University-Newark

Corey Pieper, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, is this week's Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week for February 22. Pieper, an outside hitter, helped the #5 ranked Scarlet Raiders go 3-0 last week with wins over Ramapo, Rust, and Staten Island. Pieper made an impact despite limited playing time; averaging 6.3 points per set. Pieper recorded 12 kills on just 21 attempts in a sweep of Ramapo. He started his team's match against Rust with nine straight service aces before leaving the match and then closed out his week with eight kills on nine swings in a sweep of Staten Island. On the week Pieper totaled 20 kills in just six sets, hitting .533 on the week. He finished with 16 service aces and added five digs and three blocks.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - FEBRUARY 15
Rob Wingert, Stevenson University

Rob Wingert, a senior from Hanover Township, Pa., is the Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week after leading his team to a perfect 3-0 record in conference play last week. Wingert, guided the #10 ranked Mustangs, to three CVC wins; totaling 113 assists on the week. Not only did Wingert run a high powered attack but it was efficient as well. Wingert averaged 12.56 assists per set in the three sweeps last week; with his team hitting an impressive .405 on the week. He finished with a weekly high of 42 assists against Juniata while compiling 36 assist and six digs in a win over Thiel. Against Marymount Wingert totaled 35 assists with four digs and two block assists.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - FEBRUARY 8
Jason Gardner, Stevenson University

Jason Gardner, a freshman middle blocker from York, Pa., is this week's Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week. Gardner led his team to a pair of conference wins including a 3-0 sweep of previously undefeated and #3 ranked Rutgers-Newark. Gardner paced the Mustangs with 14 kills in their upset win, committing just four errors. In his teams season opening conference match over Cairn he totaled six kills in just two sets. On the week Gardner averaged 4.0 kills per set while hitting .441 and adding six digs.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - FEBRUARY 1
TJ Wiechecki, Marymount University

Wiechecki, a sophomore from Wilmington, Del., got off to a fast start to his 2016 season. Wiechecki reached at least 15 kills in all three of his matches last week including a 27 kill outing against Kean. He totaled 16 kills and eight digs against #6 ranked Stevens. Wiechecki followed with 15 kills on just 20 attempts, hitting .700, against #3 ranked Nazareth. He closed out the week with an impressive 27 kills in his team's win over Kean, adding 10 digs and three total blocks. Wiechecki averaged 5.3 points per set in the three matches, totaling 58 kills. He added 22 digs and five total blocks while hitting .336 on the week.

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - JANUARY 25
Kevin McCandless, Rutgers University-Newark

McCandless, a senior setter from Leesburg, Va., helped the Scarlet Raiders pick up a pair of wins last week while running their powerful offensive attack. McCandless averaged 12.43 assists per set, totaling 87 assists over two matches. He started the week with 52 assists in a four set win over Endicott. In the match McCandless set up a balanced attack as four teammates reached double digits in kills. He followed with 35 assists in a sweep of Johnson & Wales, adding two block assists and eight digs. With McCandless calling the shots the Scarlet Raiders hit a season high .443 in the match.

 

CVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - JANUARY 18
Landon Shorts, Stevenson University

Shorts, a freshman from York, Pa., is the Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week for January 18. Shorts, an outside hitter, made an immediate impact as a true freshman, leading his team with 43 kills on the week. Shorts averaged 3.91 kills per set while hitting .472 on the week and finishing with 49 total points. He was perfect in his collegiate debut against Mount St. Vincent, recording nine kills on just nine swings while adding five service aces. He followed with 16 kills and 10 digs against Hunter and then closed out the week with 18 kills and four digs against Kean.
