Week Ending January 22, 2012

Ben Wolff, 6-8 Middle Hitter

Juniata College

Ben  Wolff, a senior middle hitter for Juniata College, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. Wolff led his team to a 4-2 record, including a five-set victory over Division II Hope International, where he hit .611 with 11 kills on 18 attempts and no hitting errors.

In their four-set loss to Stanford, Wollf hit .579 (12-1-19) against the fourth ranked team in Division I.   In the last match of their west coast trip, Wolff had seven kills, one service ace and four digs in a three-set loss to sixth ranked UC-Santa Cruz. At the Elmira Invitational, Wolff tallied six points, including three kills, two service aces and one block in a three set sweep over 13th ranked SUNY-New Paltz. Continuing their success, Juniata mounted another three-set victory, this time over host Elmira behind’s Wolff’s nine-kill, three-block outing.  The Meadville, Pa. native hit .750 for the match.

For the week, Wolff averaged 2.33 kills per set, hit .486 and had 0.22 aces per set. The 6-8 middle blocker added 0.45 digs per set, 0.45 blocks per set and 2.8 points per set to his weekly totals. This is the first CVC Player of the Week in the history of the conference. Juniata is coached by Kevin Moore.

 

Week Ending January, 28, 2012

Randy Hansen, 6-0 Outside Hitter

Carthage College

Randy Hansen, a senior outside hitter for Carthage College has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. Hansen (Oak Lawn, Ill.) averaged 5.27 kills per set with a .436 attack percentage, as  the No. 3 Red Men swept the Jan. 27-28 Nazareth College “Golden Flyers Invitational” at the Robert A. Kidera Gymnasium in Rochester, N.Y.  In Carthage’s second match of the tournament, the Red Men defeated top-ranked Nazareth, 3-1.  Carthage also won contests over No. 5 Juniata, No. 14 Philadelphia Biblical and unranked Southern Vermont.

In the win over Southern Vermont, Hansen led the Red Men with 16 kills and a .700 attack percentage (16-2-20).  Hansen’s .700 attack percentage broke a school record for 20 or more attempts.  In the victory over Nazareth, Hansen collected 23 kills and hit .310.  He tied his own match record of 23 kills in four sets.  In the title-match win over Juniata, Hansen collected 27 kills and hit .404 with a block solo and three block assists. He was also recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA as their NCAA Division III National Player of the week. This is the Red Men’s first CVC Player of the week award. Week Ending February 5, 2012

Dante McCoy, 6-4 Junior Middle Hitter

Thiel College

Dante McCoy, a junior middle hitter for Thiel College, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. McCoy led his team to a 2-2 record over the weekend in the AVI Tournament hosted by Thiel. In four matches, McCoy had 44 kills and 11 errors on 92 attempts for a .358 hitting average. He averaged 3.14 kills per set and 3.75 points per set.

Against Mount St. Joseph, McCoy had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, hitting at a. 346 clip. He bettered his hitting percentage in the next match against Fontbonne, hitting .375 (4-10), followed by a 19-kill, .486 performance against Nazareth although losing in four sets. McCoy had nine kills, five assists, eight digs and four blocks in a four-set loss to Elmira. This is McCoy and Thiel’s first CVC Player of the Week. Thiel is coached by Steve Brewer.

 

 

Week Ending February 12, 2012

Tyler Frings, 6-5 Senior Middle Hitter

Carthage College

Milwaukee –  Tyler Frings, a senior middle hitter for Carthage College, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. Frings (Hubertus, Wis.) ledhis team to a 2-0 record with a pair of three-set victories over the weekend.

Against NAIA opponent St. Xavier University, Frings led the Red Men with 11 kills and a .625 attack percentage (11-1-16) and four block assists. Against NCAA Division II Lindenwood, he had six kills, hit. 750 and added a block solo with five block assists.

This is Frings’ first CVC Player of the Week award. Carthage is coached by LJ Marx.

 

 

Week Ending February 19, 2012

Max Martin, 6-6 Senior Opposite

MSOE

Milwaukee – MSOE Senior Opposite Max Martin claims this week’s Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week honors. Martin, the Schaumburg Ill. native, had a season-high 17 kills and a

 .467 hitting percentage, while adding three services aces, four digs and three block assists and a total of 21.5 points for the three-set victory over St. Xavier University.

This is MSOE and Martin’s first CVC Player of the Week award. The Raiders are coached by Brian Gibboney.



 

 

Week Ending February 26, 2012

Joe Bortak, 6-5 Senior Middle Hitter

Juniata College

Milwaukee – Joe Bortak (Jeannette, PA), a freshman middle hitter for Juniata College, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. Bortak led his team to a 3-1 record, including a three-set victory over #2 Springfield College, where he hit .778 with 14 kills on 18 attempts and no hitting errors. He was also honored as the AVCA National Player of the week.

In their four-set loss to Nazareth, Bortak hit .556 (12-2-18) against the fifth ranked team in Division III.   In the last match of the weekend, Bortak had eleven kills, and four block assists in a four-set victory over NCAA Division II Grand Canyon University IN their first match of the Juniata Invitational, Bortak went 5-1-8 hitting .500 in a three-set win over Lancaster Bible.

For the week, Bortak averaged 3.00 kills per set, hit .617 and had 1.125 blocks per set.  This is Bortak’s first CVC Player of the Week, Juniata’s second honoree of the year. Juniata is coached by Kevin Moore.


Week Ending March 4, 2012

Eastern Division Player of the Week

John Almquist, Senior Setter

Juniata College

Milwaukee – John Almquist (York, Pa), a senior setter for Juniata College, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) East Division Player of the Week.

In the first ever Eastern Division Challenge Weekend, Almquist had 117assists in four matches on the week, with the team collecting a .370 hitting percentage. He also averaged 9.75 assists per game, a 2.42 digs per set average and averaged .50 blocks per set. Almquist led the Eagles to a 4-0 CVC East division conference weekend, as they won all four matches in three straight sets.

This is Almquist’s first CVC Player of the Week award. Juniata is coached by Kevin Moore.

Western Division Player of the Week

Salvatore La Cavera III, Junior Outside Hitter

University of California, Santa Cruz 

Milwaukee – Salvatore La Cavera III (Huntington Beach, Ca.), a junior outside hitter for UC Santa Cruz, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) West Division Player of the Week. In the first ever Western Division Challenge Weekend, La Cavera had 47 kills in three matches. For the week, he averaged 4.7 kills per set; hit .409 had .95 blocks per set and averaged 5.35 points per set.

In a 3-1 upset of number one ranked Carthage, La Cavera  had 29 kills with six errors on 51 attempts for a  .451 hitting percentage.  He added one ace, four digs, and three block assists in the conference victory.

This is La Cavera’s first CVC Player of the Week award. UC Santa Cruz is coached by Todd Hollenbeck.

 

 

 

Week Ending March 11, 2012

Kyle Wisner, Freshman Middle Hitter

Stevenson University

Milwaukee – Kyle Wisner (York, Pa.), a freshman middle hitter for Stevenson University, has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. Wisner led the Mustangs with 44 kills in four games last week as the Mustangs went 3-1 with wins over Philadelphia Biblical, New Jersey City and Lancaster Bible. He hit .417 for the week with 44 kills and nine errors in 84 attempts. He had 10 or more kills in three games while posting eight total blocks. Wisner had nine kills and four blocks versus PBU as Stevenson snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Crimson Eagles. He had 14 kills and hit .440 against Kean.

This is Wisner’s first CVC Player of the Week award. Stevenson is coached by Jeff Blake.

 

 

 

 

Week Ending March 17, 2012

Carthage’s Hansen receives second  CVC Player of the Week honor 

Hansen, a 6-0 senior outside hitter for Carthage College has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Week. Hansen (Oak Lawn, Ill.) led the Red Men to a perfect 5-0 last week with wins over four top-15 teams in the AVCA Coaches Poll.  He had a double-double last week against No. 8 Nazareth (15 kills and 11 digs) and No. 4 Juniata (20 kills and 18 digs). 

The other two ranked wins came against No. 5 NYU and No. 12 Elmira where he combined for another 28 kills, 15 digs and an average hitting percentage of .462.  For the week, the Illinois native averaged 4.75 kills, 5.62 points and 3.06 digs per set while hitting .466. 

Hansen also received Player of the Week honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).  This is Hansen’s second CVC award, the third time a Carthage men’s volleyball player has been honored by the conference this season. The Red Men are coached by L.J. Marx.
