Knights Fall in Opening Round

The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team took on St. Joseph's (L.I.) Saturday night in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament, with the Knights falling to the Golden Eagles 3-1. 


Match Notes

  • Nahuel Recabarren recorded a team-high 15 kills, while Paul Candland followed with 11
  • Kaipo Tagaloa dished out a game-high 44 assists, while also recording three blocks alongside McKay Walker
  • In the first set, Southern Virginia went up 8-1, led by two kills from Christian Sheaffer
  • Later on in the set, the Knights doubled up the Eagles 20-10, before Kristo Puente recorded the final point of the set to go up 1-0 in the match
  • Down 16-11 towards the end of the second set, Southern Virginia used a 6-3 run sparked by three kills from Kyler Evans and Paul Candland to come within two points 19-17
  • The Golden Eagles went on to tie the match up 1-1
  • Southern Virginia found themselves down 19-10 late in the third set, but Nahuel Recabarren sparked life back into the team, igniting a 10-3 scoring run to put the team within two points 23-21
  • A crucial service error by the Knights gave the Eagles the 2-1 lead in the match 
  •  Hopeful of a comeback, Southern Virginia fell in the fourth set, putting an end to the Knights' season
