2022 CVC Semifinals - #1 Rutgers-Newark def. #4 Marymount, 3-0 BOX SCORE

Top-seeded and host Rutgers-Newark got past #4 seed Marymount 3-0 but it was not without trying times. The two teams has 21 ties and nine lead changes during the match including the pivotal second set which featured 12 ties and 6 lead changes alone.

The Scarlet Raiders were able to push past the Saints 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 to advance to Saturday's CVC Championship match. The Saints grabbed the early lead, jumping out to a 3-1 edge at the start of the match behind back-to-back kills from Jason Perkins and Raymond Tarasi. The two teams were knotted up at 12 when the Scarlet Raiders found some momentum off a service error. An ace and kill, along with four errors opened up the Scarlet Raider lead which they eventually pushed to 21-15. However, the Saints responded with five straight points, closing to within one, but were unable to get the equalizer.

The back-and-forth second set saw the two teams stay within one point until the Scarlet Raiders took a 10-7 lead after a block by Arvind Kumar and Hollenbach. Marymount came back with Tarasi sparking the Saints to a 17-15 lead. The Saints led 21-19 but Andrew Zaleck put down two straight balls and put his team back in position for the set win. It would be Daniel Quay that finished off the set with a kill on a pass from Derek Au for a 25-23 lead.

The third set was again a tight affair until the Scarlet Raiders ran off four straight points, bolstered by a pair of aces by Zaleck, for a 15-10 lead. The Saints made a late run, drawing to within 22-21 after a kill by Hayden Kerekes. But a service error opened the door again for Rutgers-Newark who closed it out with an ace and Saints attack error.

Rutgers-Newark hit .219 in the match and was led by Zaleck with 14 kills while Derek Au added 31 assists. They improve to 21-3 overall this season. Marymount falls to 23-7 overall and hit .195 in the match with Raymond Tarasi leading the team with 8 kills.

2022 CVC Semifinals - #2 Southern Virginia def. #3 Juniata, 3-1 BOX SCORE

Two-time defending champion Southern Virginia withstood the early pressure from Juniata, coming from behind for a 3-1 win in the second semifinals match of the evening in the 2022 CVC Tournament. The #3 seeded Juniata Eagles took the opening set 25-18 but the #2 seed Knights responded with three straight by the scores of 33-31, 25-18, and 25-18.

The Eagles came out swinging, hitting .444 in the opening set with 18 kills and just two errors. However, they were unable to match those numbers for the rest of the match while the Knights' offense found its stride as the night went on.

With the score tied at 10, the Eagles rolled off four straight kills; one each from Tyler Goldsborough and Will Phelan and two from Kevin Duffy. The Eagles kept their lead, increasing it to 19-12 after a kill from Luke Hoffman, and finished off the first set on a kill by Phelan.

The second set was an epic battle that featured 16 ties and 8 lead changes as the teams battled to a 33-31 score. The Knights had serve and set point at 24-23 but Duffy extended the match for Juniata and Goldsborough turned the tables putting the Eagles one point away from the set win. However, a service error was costly, giving the Knights life rather than putting them down two sets to none. Juniata had serve and set point once again but a kill by Christian Scheaffer gave the ball back to the Knights. Tanner Durkin hit a deep serve that glanced off the Eagle back row for an ace and Scheaffer followed with another kill on a pass from Kaipo Tagaloa.

The Knights carried that momentum into the third set where they hit a match-high .448 with 13 kills and no errors. The Knights led the entire set, pulling away with a 5-1 run that made the score 20-13. Despite the Eagles' Will Phelan putting down 8 kills in the third set alone it was not enough as the frame ended on a service error.

The energy the Eagles showed in the first three sets wained, hitting just .103 in the fourth set, while the Knights' attack continued humming, hitting .387. Southern Virginia finished the match hitting .338 with 60 kills and 15 errors while recording 8 team blocks. Nahuel Recabarren led all players with 25 kills while Kaipo Tagaloa finished with 50 assists. The Knights improve to 19-3 on the season.

Juniata falls to 26-6 overall, finishing the match with a .250 hitting percentage. Will Phelan led the team with 19 kills while Peter Carioto recorded 14 digs.
