Scarlet Raiders Extend Streak Over Ranked Marymount

No. 8 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball picked up their 4th straight win this afternoon by taking down No. 12 Marymount in four sets, 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17).

In their 7th top-15 match of the season, the Scarlet Raiders (16-2, 4-0 CVC) prevailed once again. Andrew Zaleck led the Scarlet Raiders with 21 kills with a hit percentage of .289 while Arvind Kumar added 15 kills on the night. Justin Tuohy and Derek Au split setting duties tonight with Au leading the way with 27 assists. Robert Long was the anchor on the defensive side, tallying a match-high 11 digs.

Marymount (18-4, 2-2 CVC) hit .091 as a team and was led offensively by Ervin Harrell and Hayden Kerekes who each tallied eight kills. Sava Topich paced Marymount with 24 assists and 9 digs.

The Scarlet Raiders and the Saints battled in the opening set, taking turns grabbing the lead.  A 3-0 run towards the end of the set seemed to put Marymount on the path to a 1-0 lead in the match until a kill by Daniel Quay followed by a pair of kills from Kumar to close out the first set in their favor.

Much like the opening set, both teams matched each other on the court as nobody could take a commanding lead. Rutgers-Newark led 21-20, however, their offense went cold as Marymount took set two by using a 5-1 run to even the match.

In the 3rd set, the Scarlet Raiders fell behind but never wavered. They used a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to take a two-point, 16-14, lead before going on a 5-1 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Heading into the 4th set, the Scarlet Raiders had momentum on their side and put their talent on display. Up one, 9-8, Rutgers-Newark used a 10-2 run to burst the set open in their favor. Marymount made a push towards the end, however, it was too little too late as the Scarlet Raiders pushed through to take down their ranked counterparts.
