Southern Virginia Secures Fourth Straight Sweep after Intense Third Set

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University Men's Volleyball team (16-2, 6-1) took on Stevenson University (10-15, 6-1) Friday night in its final non-conference match of the year. Starting with two sets in which the Knights led easily, the Mustangs put up a great fight in an intense third and final set. The Knights finally secured another 3-0 match victory
for its fourth consecutive sweep.

In the first set, Jayton Hall served consecutively for the Knights, creating a five-point lead and forcing the Mustang's head coach, Aldis Berzins, to call the first timeout. The Mustangs came out of the timeout with a kill by Tim Flanagan, only to return it to the Knights on a service error by Flanagan.

The two teams went back and forth after multiple errors, only for Southern Virginia to deepen its lead with Curtis Stone at the service line. Later, Flanagan tallied another kill, this time to be returned with a kill from Jeremy Brown, leading the Knights to finish the first set 25-13 swiftly.

The second set started much like the first, with six straight points by Southern Virginia, with Brown making a great contribution by having three straight kills followed by an impressive block forcing Berzins to call another timeout.

After returning from the time out, McKay Walker added another kill before Flanagan scored the first point for the Mustangs, only to be returned with another point by Brown, increasing the Knight's lead on the Mustangs.

With the Knights quickly establishing their lead, the Mustangs call for another timeout. Following the break, the teams battled back and forth before Tyler Sheaffer took his place on the back of the court to serve for the Knights to take four consecutive serves ending the set 25-10.

While the Knights had a great lead and took the easy finish in the second set, the Mustangs put up a great fight in the final set. The intense third and final set started with a serve from Stevenson, only to be shut down by a powerful kill from Hall. Hall then makes a service error, allowing the Mustangs to take their first lead in the match.

The two teams battle hard back and forth as the Mustangs continue to take the lead with multiple kills and a block by Aidan O'Brien. The teams continued to go back and forth between service errors before Hall took his place again on the court to serve for the Knights.

Hall ties the set 10-10. It seems the Knights are back, but the teams continue to go head to head with service errors, and the back-and-forth kills between Elliot De La Torre, Brown, O'Brien, and Hall.

As the set concluded, fans were on the edge of their seats as the two teams took turns leading the set by just one point before returning it to the other team with a service error. The set raged on, and Christian Sheaffer went to the back of the court to serve for the Knights. Sheaffer's first serve allowed the Knights to move to the lead as Flanagan gave an attack error. Sheaffer's next serve landed inside the lines without a touch, ending the set 33-31 with a huge uproar as the Knights won the match.

Southern Virginia concludes its regular season next weekend with two conference contests, including a match against No. 15 Rutgers-Newark on Friday, April 7, at 7 p.m.
