Box Score 2 CINCINNATI, OHIO – The 15
th-ranked Thiel College men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Fontbonne University after falling to Lakeland College by a 3-0 margin in their opening match Saturday during the first day of the Continental Volleyball Conference Crossover Weekend.
With the split, Thiel's overall record stands at 4-4 after eight non-conference tilts. The Muskies stand at 7-2 on the year while the Griffins of Fontbonne fall to 0-2 on the year.
Lakeland posted a 3-0 victory via set scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-14. The Muskies roared out to a 13-5 lead in the first set, with an
Evan Proksell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) kill bringing Thiel to within two (22-20) of the lead. That was, however, as close as the Tomcats could get, as Lakeland closed out the set with a 5-2 run.
Junior
Dylan Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Elderton) led all Tomcats with five kills while senior
Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) led the team with nine assists. Defensively, Thiel utilized seven digs by Proksell to lead the squad in that category.
Thiel also posted 5.0 team blocks in the contest via a solo block and eight block assists.
In the 3-0 win over Fontbonne, Thiel posted set scores of 25-10, 25-21, 25-17. The Tomcats made just ten errors in 85 total attacks to hit a season-best .329 on the afternoon.
In the opening set, Thiel led by as many as 13 (19-6) before a service error gave the Griffins their seventh point. A kill and a block assist by junior
Michael Whitelock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) closed out the first set for the Tomcats, as they captured the set by a 25-10 margin. Thiel played 11 different players in the win.
Whitelock posted an efficient nine kills on 14 total attacks. Proksell's three service aces led Thiel, while Hamilton assisted on 34 of his team's 38 total kills against Fontbonne. Junior
Alex Ciepiela (Marilla, N.Y./Iroquios Central) finished with eight kills and a team-high seven digs.
The Tomcats are back in action Sunday when they take on Dominican College. The match begins at 1:30 p.m.
