2015 CVC Tournament Preview

The 2015 Continental Volleyball Conference Tournament is set and will feature Marymount University, Rutgers University-Newark, Stevenson University, and Thiel College as they battle for the CVC crown.

Tournament At a Glance
The 2015 CVC Tournament will run April 10-11 and be held on the campus of Rutgers University-Newark in Newark, New Jersey. Friday's semifinal matches are set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. while the Championship match will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday. 2015 Tournament Bracket

The first semifinal game will be #2 seed Stevenson against #3 seed Marymount with the second match of the night pitting #1 seed Rutgers-Newark against #4 seed Thiel. All games will be broadcast live via Rutgers-Newark Game Day network. About Marymount
Marymount is making their first postseason appearance after going 14-19 overall and 5-7 in CVC action this season. The Saints, in just their second year as a program, are coached by Hudson Bates and increased their win total by five from last year. The come into the tournament off a 3-1 loss to Rutgers-Newark last Saturday but prior to that loss had won three consecutive matches.

The Saints are a young team with no juniors or seniors on the roster. The Saints are hitting .186 as a team and recorded 128 service aces this year. Their attack has been led by freshman T.J. Wiechecki with over 300 kills this season, good for tops in the conference , while hitting .149 on the year. Wiechecki has also been solid at the net defensively with 65 total blocks and ranks third on the team in digs. Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz, a sophomore, is second on the team with 233 kills while freshman Graham Clark leads the team with a .324 hitting percentage and 95 blocks. Jordan Pawlicki, a freshman, finished with 210 digs while Erich Bratke, a freshman, ran the offense with 851 assists.

 

About Rutgers-Newark
Rutgers-Newark is having a memorable first season at the D3 level, going 19-8 overall and 11-1 in the conference. The Scarlet Raiders are coached by Pedro Trevino and have won six straight matches including a 3-2 win over #4 Juniata last week.

The Scarlet Raiders are hitting .281 as a team this year, second best in the CVC, and totaled 138 service aces. Rutgers-Newark has five players with 150 or more kills this year, paced by junior Cody Chidsey with 308 kills. Chidsey is hitting a conference best .447 this year with junior setter Kevin McCandless setting up most of his attacks, currently with 905 assists and leading the CVC with 10.4 assists per set. Defensively junior libero Quocmy Nguyen leads the team with 201 digs while sophomore Nick Kuti has totaled 118 blocks, first in the conference.

 

About Stevenson
Stevenson went 16-13 overall this season and 7-5 in CVC play. Coached by first year coach Steve Grossnickle the Mustangs have had an up and down year, winning 16 matches but never with a winning streak longer than three. The Mustangs come into the tournament off a 3-1 win over Thiel on Saturday.

The Mustangs are hitting .241 as a team and have 107 service aces this year. They feature a balanced attack with two players over 200 kills and two more with 170 or more. Senior Kyle Wisner leads the team with 245 kills, hitting .247 this year, while junior Patrick Schuyler has recorded 225 kills and a .269 hitting percentage. With just 331 attempts on the year sophomore Nate Ellis makes the most of his chances, hitting .420 on the season with 178 kills. Senior David Moler leads the offense with 985 assists, second in the CVC, while also piling up a team best 180 digs. At the net the duo of Ellis and Wisner have combined for 190 blocks this season.

 

About Thiel
Thiel was 11-13 overall and 4-8 in the CVC this year under first year head coach Adam Roche. They enter the tournament on a two match losing streak, having falling to Rutgers-Newark and Stevenson. The Tomcats are an experienced team with eight seniors on the squa

Thiel is a defensive oriented team, leading the conference in both digs and blocks per set. Senior Dylan Lasher leads the team with 214 kills, averaging 2.97 per set, while senior John Turner and Michael Whitelock have each recorded 183 kills this season. The Tomcats have used a two setter system this year, with senior Charlie Tindall and sophomore Zach Rombach each totaling over 350 assists a piece. Senior Colin Vitale leads the conference with 287 digs while Whitelock has a team high 95 blocks. 

 

 

Game Notes

  • Stevenson and Thiel are the only members of the CVC to have appeared in the postseason tournament in all four years of existence.
  • Stevenson has won their first match of the tournament in each of their previous three appearances while Thiel is looking for their first postseason win.
  • There will be a new CVC Champion for the first time in two years as Juniata College won the previous two tournaments. UC-Santa Cruz won the innaugural CVC Tournament in 2012.
  • Marymount was 1-5 against the tournament field this season.
  • Rutgers-Newark went a perfect 6-0 against tournament teams this year.
  • Stevenson was 4-2 in meetings this year against teams in the tournament.
  • Thiel finished  1-5 against this year's tournament teams.
