Knights Add CVC Championship to Undefeated Run

Southern Virginia University added the 2024 Continental Volleyball Conference Championship to its undefeated run this season, defeating Juniata College 3-0 in Saturday's championship match. The Knights won 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 to improve to 28-0 on the season.

The top two seeds in the tournament, #1 Southern Virginia and #2 Juniata, had met during the regular season with the Knights coming back after dropping the opening set for a 3-1 win. That is just one of three sets the Knights dropped so far this season.

The Knights and Eagles went back and forth throughout the opening frame, with Juniata holding a slight 6-5 edge early on. However back-to-back kills by Kristo Bianchin and Samuel Candland gave the Knights the lead, one they would not relinquish. The first set came to a close on an Eagle attack error, one of nine in the set.

Much like the first set, Juniata held a slight early lead; up 5-4 after a kill by Tyler Phillips. This time it was Kyler Evans turning the tide for the Knights with a kill from Tyler Sheaffer. The Knights pulled away as they hit a match-high .538 in the set with 14 kills and 0 errors on just 26 swings.

The two teams were even at 17-17 when the Knights rolled off six straight points. Evans started the run and Jeremy Brown added two kills and an ace to close out the rally. Championship point was recorded by Christian Sheaffer, set up by brother Tyler.

Southern Virginia hit .338 as a team, compared to .082 for Juniata. Christian Sheaffer led Southern Virginia with 12 kills while Jeremy Brown finished with 10 kills. Tyler Sheaffer recorded 29 assists and Justin Madsen finished with 13 digs. Juniata was led by Tyler Goldsborough with 12 kills.

This is the third CVC Championship in program history, joining the 2019 and 2021 teams. Southern Virginia is the #1 ranked team in the country and awaits Monday's announcement of the NCAA Division III Tournament field.
