CVC Tournament Preview

The 2024 Continental Volleyball Conference Tournament begins this week with three days of action, concluding with Saturday's championship match. The quarterfinal round will take place on Tuesday, hosted at the home site of the higher seed. Both semifinals matches on Friday and the championship match on Saturday will be hosted at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. Ticket prices for the semifinals and championship are $6 per day or $10 for a tournament pass. Students with a valid CVC member school ID and children under the age of 5 are free. 

CVC Tournament Schedule

Quarterfinals - Tuesday, April 9 - at Higher Seed
Match 1: #4 Randolph-Macon vs. #5 Eastern Mennonite, 7 p.m.
Match 2: #3 Marymount vs. #6 Rutgers-Newark, 6 p.m.

Semifinals - Friday, April 12 at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, Va.)
Match 3: #1 Southern Virginia vs. Winner of Match 1, 5 p.m.
Match 4:#2 Juniata vs. Winner of Match 2, 7:30 p.m.

Championship - Saturday, April 13 at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, Va.)
Match 5: Winner of Match 3 vs. Winner of Match 4, 3 p.m.

 

 

#1 Southern Virginia University

The Knights completed the first undefeated regular season in CVC history, going 26-0 overall, and are the #1 ranked team in the country. They have won two CVC Championships, with the last coming in 2021. The Knights lead the CVC with a .355 team-hitting percentage and aces with 190. Christian Sheaffer paces the offense with his 301 kills and .383 hitting percentage while Tyler Sheaffer is handing out 10.24 assists per set. Justin Madsen has totaled 188 digs at his libero position while Kristo Bianchin leads the team with 60 blocks.

     
 

#2 Juniata College

Juniata has a CVC record four championships in program history. They are looking to defend last year's title, which would be just the second time a team has repeated as CVC champion. The Eagles are 24-5 overall this year, ranked #6 in the latest AVCA poll. They bring a six-match winning streak into the tournament. The Eagles are second in the conference with a .313 hitting percentage and feature one of the top middles, Luke Hoffman, in the league. Tyler Goldsborough is hitting .340 this year and leads the CVC with 321 kills while Reese Ganter leads the league at 10.82 assists per set.

     
 

#3 Marymount University

Marymount is making its 9th trip to the CVC Tournament, second only to Juniata. The Saints are 21-8 overall this year, marking the third straight season they have reached 20 wins and are currently ranked #20 in the nation. The Saints are hitting .260 as a team this season and have a balanced attack with seven players topping 100 kills. Diego Pena leads the way with 189 kills and is hitting .304 while also totaling 348 assists, 156 digs, and 28 aces. 

     
 

#4 Randolph-Macon College

Making their fourth postseason trip, the Yellow Jackets are looking for their first CVC tournament win in program history. They are 18-10 this season and boast a strong net defense. The Yellow Jackets led the CVC with 203 total blocks this season, averaging 2.05 per set. The net presence comes from Phillip Van Essendelft, Owen Hahn, Ian Wagenhauser, and Kody Rogan; all of whom have at least 42 blocks this season. Wagenhauser leads the team in kills while Rogan is second in kills and digs and tops in assists and aces.

     
 

#5 Eastern Mennonite University

Eastern Mennonite is making its first postseason trip since 2018. The Royals were 17-12 overall this season under head coach Omar Hoyos, the program's first winning season since 2018. This season the Royals are hitting .223 as a team, a nearly 30-point bump from last year. David Ward and Nate McGhee have each topped 200 kills this season while Walter Spurlock and Ben Childers are additional options. Tyler Oaks is averaging 8.36 assists per set while Rey De La Cruz is averaging 2.32 digs per set. 

     
 

#6 Rutgers University-Newark

Rutgers-Newark is making its 8th CVC Tournament, having won two previous titles (2019 and 2021). They finished the regular season with a 14-11 overall record. The Scarlet Raiders are hitting .226 as a team and are second in the league with 176 aces. Martin Chromulak (3.15 k/s) and Lucas Blanco (3.07 k/s) lead the attack with Derek Au running the offense (9.11 a/s). Freshman Aleks Kolodziej has contributed this year with 180 kills and 40 total blocks.
