Saints Edge Kean in Quarterfinals

The Marymount men's volleyball team opened up Continental Volleyball Conference postseason play on Tuesday evening, hosting Kean College in Converse Family Fieldhouse.

It took five sets in all, but the Saints advanced in the tournament, taking down the Cougars 3-2.

Notable

  • Hayden Kerekes was the standout for the Saints in the match, scoring 23 points on 19 total kills, hitting at a .341 average. He addded five total blocks, three solo, with two digs. 
  • Mason Moore had 14 kills while hitting at a .455 average. Adding three blocks, he also notched five digs in the match. 
  • Diego Peña put up a 12.5 point performance in the win, hitting 12 kills with a block and seven digs. 
  • Devon Robinson had eight kills in the match, adding 12 digs and two blocks. 
  • Grayson Andrews had 51 assists in the match eith eight digs and three kills. 

How It Happened

  • The Saints had trouble gaining momentum in the first set, with Kean consistently staying on their heels.
  • The Cougars ended up taking the first set, needing to get to 27 points to put Marymount down 1-0 in sets.
  • Tied up 10-10 in the second set of play, the Saints were looking for the spark needed to gain traction. 
  • A 7-1 run pushed the Saints ahead 18-to-12, with a 5-1 run at the end to give the Saints the needed second-set win to even up the match.
  • A quick six-point run by the Saints, capped off by a kill from Peña, gave them a strong lead early in the third set of action. 
  • The Cougars managed to keep it close throughout the set, but a kill from Moore was the decider to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.
  • Kean took the fourth set to force a fifth-and-final set of play to see who advances.
  • With Kean up 13-to-11, the Saints reconvened to find one final push.
  • A kill from Kerekes, two aces from Robinson, and a few errors were what Marymount needed, ending the match and keeping their season alive. 

Up Next

  • The Saints will travel to Buena Vista, Va. for the remainder of the CVC tournament, which is now hosted by Southern Virginia.
  • Marymount will faceoff with Juniata on Friday, Apr. 14th.
