Zaleck First to Repeat as CVC Player of the Year

Andrew Zaleck becomes the first player in Continental Volleyball Conference history to repeat as the Player of the Year. The senior outside hitter from Rutgers University-Newark led all players in conference play in kills per set (4.44) and points per set (5.1) while hitting .275. He added six aces, 22 digs, and 18 blocks in his seven conference matches and totaled 126.5 points. Overall this season Zaleck has recorded 338 kills, averaging 4.83 per set, while hitting .314 and totaling 389.5 points. 

His teammate Matt Nikishin also repeats, earning his second straight Libero of the Year award. Nikishin totaled 67 digs in his eight conference matches, averaging 2.39 digs per set. He reached double-digit digs against four conference opponents and totaled 148 digs overall this season. He is the first player to win multiple CVC Libero of the Year awards during their career.

The 2023 CVC Setter of the Year is Tyler Sheaffer from Southern Virginia University. A senior, Sheaffer led the Knight's attack this year by averaging a conference-high 10.15 assists per set in conference play. He finished with 617 assists overall this season, topping 30 assists in a match on 14 different occasions. Sheaffer becomes the first Knight to win the conference award.

This year's Rookie of the Year is from Randolph-Macon College, Ian Wagenhauser. The freshman recorded 113 kills, 29 digs, and 16 blocks in conference play, hitting .241 in his eight CVC matches. The outside hitter ranked 1st in conference play in kills, 3rd in kills per set, and 5th in aces. Overall this season he finished with 318 kills, averaging 3.53 per set, with 101 digs, 55 blocks, and 37 aces. Wagenahuser is the first Yellow Jacket in program history to receive the award.

Tom Peterson collects his third career CVC Coach of the Year award. He coached the Knights to a 7-1 conference record this spring, earning a share of the CVC regular season title. Southern Virginia concluded the regular season with a 17-2 overall record, ranked #7 in the country, and is the top seed in the 2023 CVC Tournament. Peterson has now won the award in three of the last four seasons.
