Rutgers-Newark Sweeps #11 NYU

No. 8 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball bounced back well against No. 11 New York University this evening with a 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-21) sweep. 

Rutgers-Newark (12-2) returned to the win column this evening behind Andrew Zaleck's 15 kills and .409 hit percentage. Arvind Kumar finished with 10 kills while Derek Au led the team with 34 assists. Daniel Quay had a strong night at the net, with five blocks (one solo) to go along with four kills. 

NYU (7-6) was led by James Haag's seven kills while Ryan Whealen and Ryan Li split setting duties and secured 19 and 11 assists, respectively. 

After trading points early on, NYU took control of the match and used a 9-3 run to take a 14-9 lead. Kumar and Martin Chromulak each recorded a kill later in the set to knot the game up at 17. From there, the Scarlet Raiders fell behind 20-17 before tying the set up once again at 22. NYU would take a 23-22 lead before Rutgers-Newark closed the set out with a 3-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

The second set started off much like the first with NYU taking the lead early on. Robert Long and Kumar logged one kill each late in the set to take a 23-22 lead. NYU would bounce back and knot the set up at 24 before Zaleck slammed the door close with a pair of close.

Now in the driver's seat with a 2-0 in the match, the Scarlet Raiders won the third set by their largest margin of the night. Using a 5-0 run early to jump in front, Rutgers-Newark was able to hold off NYU and secure the win over their ranked counterparts.
