2020 CVC All-Conference Team

2020 CVC All-Conference Team

The Continental Volleyball Coaches have completed their voting and are pleased to announce the 2020 CVC All-Conference team. Due to the circumstances given the shortened season this year's All-Conference team selections were split into a 12 member First Team and 9 member Second Team with statistics for all matches during the 2020 season used for consideration.

There were just two repeat First Team All-Conference selections from last year (Paul Clark and Nahuel Recabarren) while several underclassmen made such impactful performances that they earned First Team honors. Clark and Recabarren, teammates at Southern Virginia, helped the Knights get off to a 12-3 start this season. Clark averaged 2.46 kills per set this season while hitting .350 meanwhile Recabarren was 5th in the league at 3.35 kills per set, hitting .306, with 34 total blocks.

Among the underclassmen to make an immediate impression were a trio from Rutgers University-Newark. Daniel Quay, a sophomore middle hitter, continued his growth from last season; upping his numbers to 101 total kills and 46 total blocks while ranking 2nd in the league with a .391 hitting percentage. He was joined on the First Team by freshmen Justin Tuohy and Andrew Zaleck. Together the trio helped Rutgers-Newark get off to a 17-1 start this year, the best start in program history. Tuohy, a setter, paced the CVC with 10.98 assists per set while Zaleck hit .285 and was second in the league at 4.48 kills per set.

Juniata College also placed three on the First Team in Robert Bowling, Kevin Duffy, and Michael Young. Bowling finished in the top ten in the league in kills (201), kills per set (3.24), aces (20), points (236.5), and points per set (3.8) while Duffy totaled 151 kills and led the league with a .420 hitting percentage while also ranking 3rd in total blocks with 52. Young averaged 10.34 assists per set in helping the Eagles to the second-best team hitting percentage in the CVC.

Marymount University seniors Sam Safley and Joseph Zanelotti close out their careers as All-Conference selections. Safley, an outside hitter, led the CVC with 286 total kills; averaging 4.09 per set and hitting .280 this spring. He also recorded 20 aces and 72 digs. Zanelotti, a setter, finished with a league-best 699 assists, averaging 9.99 per set and ranking 4th in aces with 26.

The final two First Team selections are at opposite ends of the playing spectrum. Senior Nick Baxter finished his career at Elizabethtown College with 728 kills and 102 blocks while Jared Ray started his career at Kean University with 229 kills this past season, averaging a league-best 4.49 kills per set.

John Bohrer was one of just two freshmen to earn Second Team All-Conference honors. The outside hitter finished with 46 kills, 70 digs, and 8 aces for Immaculata University this year. The other freshman earning Second Team honors was Randolph-Macon College's Kolby Gibson. The outside hitter led the Yellow Jackets with 158 kills this season, adding 99 digs. His teammate Lee Olenyik was also named Second Team after totaling 150 kills, 79 digs, and 39 total blocks.

Two other seniors join Olenyik in capping off their careers with All-Conference honors. Neumann University outside hitter Ryan Bollinger had a team-high 147 kills this year while finishing second on the team with 172 digs. Southern Virginia's Kaipo Tagaloa earned his second straight Second Team All-Conference nod after averaging 8.76 assists per set this season.

Eastern Mennonite University's Jacob Durren was named Second Team after recording 49 kills and 19 blocks this season from his middle blocker position.

Two more players from Kean picked up All-Conference honors; Seth Russell and Jonathan Meyer. Russell, an outside hitter, tallied 131 kills and 71 digs this season while Meyer was one of just two liberos to earn All-Conference honors after totaling 117 digs, an average of 2.29 per set, this season for the Cougars.

The other libero to be named All-Conference was Marymount sophomore, Chris Manganiello. Manganiello led the league with 184 digs this season, averaging 2.63 per set.
