Southern Virginia Claims 2019 CVC Title

Southern Virginia Claims 2019 CVC Title

Southern Virginia University completed the perfect Continental Volleyball Conference season, following up their undefeated regular season with the 2019 CVC Tournament title. The Knights become the first program in conference history to go undefeated in the regular season and postseason combined, finishing the 2019 season with a 13-0 combined CVC mark.

Southern Virginia, who was the top-seed and host of the tournament, led the entire opening set; although Juniata evened the score seven times during the set. After Juniata brought the score to 23-22 Colby Wilson gave the Knights some room with a kill, allowing Nahuel Recabarren to finish the set off to put Southern Virginia out on top early with a 25-22 opening set win.

Southern Virginia followed with a 25-20 win in the second set, outhitting Juniata .242 to .031 in the set. But the Eagles, who is the only school to win multiple CVC tournament titles, showed their resolve and turned up the heat, fighting their way back into the match.

Juniata opened up a 5-2 lead to start the 3rd set and after Southern Virginia pulled to within two points at 12-10, were able to take control by hitting .526 with 11 kills and just one error, en route to a 25-16 win. Juniata continued their strong attack in the 4th set; scoring the first three points. However, that would be the largest lead of the set for either team as they remained within two points of each other the rest of the way. With the score tied at 24-24, Joe Fick and Quinn Peterson put down back to back kills to draw the Eagles even with the Knights on the match score.

Juniata took a 3-1 lead after a kill from Kevin Duffy but Recabarren ended the Eagles run with a kill for the Knights. With the score tied at 6-6, Southern Virginia would go on a 7-2 run to take the momentum back. The Knights took advantage of three Eagles' errors during that span to go along with an ace from Recabarren. The Eagles closed to within two points but an attack error and service error ended any rally and saw the home fans storm the court to celebrate the Southern Virginia win.

Southern Virginia, ranked #8 in the latest AVCA national poll, hit .307 in the match with Nahuel Recabarren finishing with 33 kills. Kaipo Tagaloa recorded 54 assists and eight digs while Paul Clark and Daniel Aina each tallied 11 digs.

Juniata hit .248 in the match with Quinn Peterson finishing with a team-high 20 kills.
