CVC Chat: Micah Godshall

CVC Chat: Micah Godshall

Perspective is how one views or has an attitude towards a particular something. Micah Godshall has seen his views and attitude change over the years during his time at Cairn University. Whether it was stepping onto a new campus as a true freshman, finding out what it takes to succeed in collegiate athletics, or even gaining a greater appreciation for a wide range of sports thanks to a job; the more Micah understood, the more his perspective changed.

Growing up in nearby Souderton, Pennsylvania it was a short drive, under an hour, to Cairn University for Micah. College is often the place where one becomes who they will be for their adult life. Much more than just preparing for a career college is where one discovers who they truly are, solidify their own opinions, and make friends for life. For Micah, a business administration major working towards pursuing a master's degree, college has been about defining his views on various things and changing his perspective.

Walking onto a college campus can be overwhelming and take time to get acclimated. That is just as true for someone playing a collegiate sport. While Micah had played volleyball for years, it was not until he was into his second year at Cairn before he began to understand what that truly meant for him.

"I did not take volleyball extremely seriously until my sophomore year of college and now I am taking advantage of playing in one of the most competitive conference (Continental Volleyball Conference) in Division III volleyball. I love to push myself to be the best I can be. I have always taken pride in playing sports at a high level and playing in the CVC has really been a great experience."

Micah, a junior opposite hitter, is currently second on the Highlanders in kills with 126 this season, averaging 2.10 kills per set, while also ranking third on the team in digs and leading the team in service aces with 20.

"I love the sport of volleyball, I love everything about it and so the collegiate level is one of the highest that I can play right now and I am greatly enjoying the challenge. The game is very fun for me and it is an escape from school, work, and all the responsibilities I have for the time being."

Although he gets to escape from work when on the court, it is through working in the Sports Information department at Cairn that Micah was able to gain a better appreciation for sports other than volleyball.

"I started out working in game day operations, just setting up for events because it was an easy job that I could fit in with school. Very soon after some positions for Sports Information opened up and I started keeping statistics, working baseball, softball, women's volleyball, and soccer."

As an athlete, one may not fully understand what it means to cover sports. Micah soon found out that playing the sport and knowing the sport are two different things.

"I did not know how difficult it was to track statistics for certain sports like basketball and volleyball. It is a very hard job to correctly keep all of those statistics as well as keep up with the pace of the game and not get behind. It has also taught me an appreciation for all sports. Working closely at the games, especially the sports I have not played before, has given me a new understanding of the games and all of the strategy that goes into them."

Working in the Sports Information office has also helped Micah bond with his teammates and become better friends. Teammates Andy Willits and Juston Wolgemuth are also members of the Sports Information office.

"I think working together has helped us become better friends. We get to know each other better and it shows in our chemistry on the court. We are able to work together better in both athletics and work because of how well we know each other."

When others from outside the campus look at Cairn, they may think they know the school and their students. However, as we have seen, perspective is everything. So being there on the campus, knowing first-hand, what is Micah's perspective? How would he describe Cairn?

"Cairn is a small school where everyone is familiar with everyone. Everyone is striving to find success in athletics, which makes for a very intense and competitive atmosphere on the campus. We are working hard to make a name for Cairn athletics. It is such a cool environment to see everyone working this hard, doing their best for the school. That is what I love most about Cairn."
