NEWARK, N.J. (April 20, 2015) – Junior middle Cody Chidsey of the Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team was named a second-team American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American, it was announced Monday morning.

Chidsey has put together a remarkable 2015 season, playing a major role in the program's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship and winning the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) crown on April 11. The junior and his teammates are currently in preparation for their national quarterfinal match against fourth-ranked and second-seeded Springfield College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J. on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology.

"Cody's hard work throughout his career has allowed him to do the things he has this year and to receive a prestigious honor like AVCA All-American," Head Coach Pedro Trevino said. "There could not be a more deserving student-athlete, and I am looking forward to watching him receive the award Thursday night."

Chidsey – along with the other first- and second-team AVCA All-Americans – will be honored at a banquet on Thursday evening prior to the start of Friday's quarterfinals.

The Bath, Pa. native was named the CVC Player of the Year in addition to receiving all-conference honors. He was a three-time CVC Player of the Week and on April 14 earned Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week distinction as well.

He has put up remarkable numbers throughout the season, playing in all 31 matches (107 sets) while tallying 3.14 kills per set and 3.71 points per set on the back of an amazing .436 hitting percentage. Heading into the weekend, Chidsey is fourth nationally in hitting percentage and 33rd in kills per set which are both unheard of for a middle. He is also 33rd in the country points per set and leads the CVC in hitting percentage.

The junior eclipsed double-digit kills 17 times this season, including 11 in the team's NCAA first round win over Endicott College on Saturday night in which he hit .588. From March 4-April 10, Chidsey hit at least .400 in 10-of-11 matches, averaging 15.4 kills per outing over that span.

Chidsey has accumulated 336 kills, 397 points, 69 total blocks and 36 digs this season.

"We have had a great season so far and can't wait for Friday night," added Trevino. "Even though this award will have Cody's name on it, it speaks volumes about our entire team and what we have been able to accomplish so far this season."
