2014 CVC Tournament Preview

The third edition of the Continental Volleyball Conference Tournament begins this weekend in Greenville, Pa. with four nationally ranked teams among the field of six battling for an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

At a Glance
The tournament will be held on the campus of Thiel College in Greenville, Pa. and feature the top three teams during the regular season from both the West and East Division of the CVC. Carthage College is the top seed in the West and is joined by second seed Lakeland College and third seed Dominican University. On the East side Stevenson University is the top seed and is joined by second seed Juniata College and third seed Thie
l College.

Tournament Schedule
The tournament begins on Saturday, April 12 and will conclude Sunday, April 13. Lakeland will face Thiel at 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Juniata and Dominican at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the first match will then face Stevenson at 3 p.m. while the winner of the second match will face Carthage at 5:30 p.m. The championship match will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 13. CARTHAGE COLLEGE RED MEN
2014 Overall Record (CVC): 22-6 (10-0)

Carthage comes into the tournament with a five match winning streak and are the top seed in the West. They went 7-1 against the tournament field this season. The Red Men feature two players with over 300 kills in Jim Schultz (3.57 kills per set) and Jon Storm (3.40 kills per set). Connor Wexter, the reigning CVC Player of the Year, is averaging 10.90 assists and 1.53 digs per set this season.

 

DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY STARS
2014 Overall Record (CVC): 13-13 (5-5)

Dominican advanced to the CVC Tournament in the first year of the program after going 5-5 during conference play. The Stars have won three straight matches and went 1-5 against the tournament field. The Stars are led by Zachery Sinn who is averaging 3.18 kills per set while hitting .263 this season. Alex Coyne averages 9.58 assists per set.

 

 

JUNIATA COLLEGE EAGLES
2014 Overall Record (CVC): 24-4 (9-1)

Juniata had their eight match winning streak snapped last weekend in a loss to Stevenson but have still managed to win nine of their last ten matches. The Eagles went 4-2 against the tournament field this season and are the second seed in the East. Alex McColgin leads the team with 214 kills this season, averaging 2.93 per set while Matt Elias runs the attack and averages 9.28 assists per set.

 

LAKELAND COLLEGE MUSKIES
2014 Overall Record (CVC): 20-7 (8-2)

Lakeland is the two seed in the West for this weekend's tournament after going 8-2 in their first season with the CVC. The Muskies have won five of their last six matches and went 7-2 against the tournament field this season including wins over all three seeds in the East. They are led by junior Alec Redlich who is averaging 3.80 kills per set. As a team the Muskies are hitting .236 this season.

 

STEVENSON UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS
2014 Overall Record (CVC): 20-7 (9-1)

Stevenson carries a six match winning streak into the tournament including a 3-1 upset over #1 ranked Juniata last weekend. The Mustangs went 3-2 against the tournament field teams this season and are the top seed in the East portion of the tournament. They feature a balanced attack with four players averaging at least two kills per set. Austin Jacoby leads the way with 2.76 kills per set while David Moler is averaging 10.02 assists per set.

 

THIEL COLLEGE TOMCATS
2014 Overall Record (CVC): 13-16 (6-4)

Thiel enters the tournament as the #3 seed in the East. The Tomcats are 3-3 in their last six games with wins over Marymount, Eastern Mennonite and Cairn. They went 0-9 against the tournament field this season including a 3-0 loss to Stevenson in their regular season finale. The Tomcats are led by Dylan Lasher who is averaging 2.10 kills per set and Michael Whitelock who is hitting .370 this season and aveaging 1.98 kills per set.
