The Carthage College men's volleyball team (5-1, 0-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked first in the Jan. 31 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, handed Quincy University (10-1) its first loss on Friday, Feb. 3 with a 3-1 victory at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Hawks were 21-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22.
Carthage hit .388 as a team.
Pat Barry (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) led the Red Men with 20 kills and a .500 attack percentage (20-2-36).
Randy Hansen (Sr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had 14 kills and hit .370 (14-4-27), while
Matt Yanz (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) added 13 kills with a .545 mark (13-1-22) and four block assists. Setter
Connor Wexter (So., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 13.75 assists per set and collected three block assists. Joe Ascher led Quincy with 22 kills and a .545 attack percentage (22-1-40), while Steven Battaglia had 10 kills and hit .350.
Carthage plays host to St. Xavier University on Saturday, Feb. 11 in a 1 p.m. match, also at Tarble Arena.
