Limestone Drops the Battle of the Saints to Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va.   – The Limestone College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to National Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III opponent Marymount University on Saturday evening at the Verizon Sports Arena.

  • Senior outside hitter Anthony Savage (York, Pa.) paced the Saints with seven kills.
  • Redshirt-junior setter Logan Riley (Valencia, Calif.) notched 16 assists.
  • Freshman libero Florian Ruhm (Kriftel, Germany) recorded 12 digs.   
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Set
Limestone started the set by scoring the first four points but Marymount copied Limestone with four consecutive points of its own to even the score at four-all. Both teams traded points as the scoreboard was knotted on three more occasions before Marymount put together a 3-0 run to widen the gap, 10-7. The Blue and Gold tried to work its way back into the set but fell short as Marymount took the first set, 25-17.
 
Second Set
The start of the second mirrored the first as both teams traded five points this time to deaden the score at 5-5. Marymount used its next possession to go out ahead of the Saints and score three unanswered points to take an 8-5 lead. Down the stretch, Limestone cut the difference to two points but Marymount never relinquished the lead as Marymount won the second set, 25-22.  
 
Third Set
Marymount looked to shift the momentum early with the first three points but Limestone retaliated with a 7-0 run to go out ahead, 7-3. The Saints remained in control late into the set until Marymount outscored the Saints 5-0 to steal the lead, 19-15. Despite efforts from the Saints, Limestone couldn't overcome the difference as Marymount won the third set, 25-16.

  • Marymount is currently ranked 14th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Poll.
  • In the first two matches of the season, the second set has seen the closest scores for the Saints.
 
UP NEXT
The Saints return to action on Friday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. against the University of Charleston. The non-conference game will be the first-of-three games in Nashville, Tenn. as part of the Off the Block Grow the Game Challenge.
