Men’s Volleyball Tops #14 Juniata, Wentworth on Saturday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories over #14 Juniata (3-2) and Wentworth (3-1) in a non-conference tri-match inside the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon. The wins bring the Golden Eagles to 11-2 overall on the season.

SJC 3, Juniata 2

After taking a tough 25-22 loss in the first set, the hosts responded with 26-24 and 25-18 wins in sets two and three, respectively, but couldn't clinch an upset win in the fourth where they were downed 25-28.

Behind 9-6 in the fifth, Juniata won three-straight points to knot the score up at nine, but SJC rallied for six of the final nine points (15-12) and won the match by a 3-2 scoreline.

St. Joseph's hit .186 in the match and was led by junior Matthew Amberge, who put down a team-high 15 kills and was credited with a team-best 13 digs. Junior Paul Curaro went for 14 kills, nine digs and four service aces.

Senior Tyler Jones dished out a team-high 48 assists and collected 12 digs. Juniata's Quinn Peterson led all players with 21 kills.

SJC 3, Wentworth 1

A slow start saw the Golden Eagles drop the first set, 25-17, but a strong second frame put the hosts back on track and fired them to three-consecutive set victories--25-16, 25-16, 25-19--to ensure they went 2-0 on the afternoon.

Curaro went for a team-high 14 kills and headlined an SJC attack that hit .177 in the contest. Amberge posted his second double-double of the afternoon with 12 kills and 13 assists, and Flohr led the team with 14 digs.

Jones was credited with 47 assists and junior Matt Cole hit .471 and put down nine kills.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 13 when they host St. Joseph's College (Brkln) for a Skyline Conference contest at 7:00 pm.
