No. 3 Men's Volleyball Goes 5-0 at the March 16-18 Carthage/MSOE Tournament

Red Men Play Host to Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne on Saturday

The Carthage College men's volleyball team (20-4, 2-1 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked third in the March 13 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, won a pair of matches on Sunday, March 18 to conclude a perfect, 5-0 run through the Friday-Sunday, March 16-18 Carthage/Milwaukee School of Engineering Tournament at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. 

On Sunday, Carthage swept No. 12 Elmira College (18-12), 3-0, before defeating No. 4 Juniata College (19-7) by a 3-1 margin.  The Red Men's winning set scores over the Soaring Eagles were 25-20, 25-13 and 25-23, and their winning scores over the Juniata Eagles were 25-18, 25-27, 25-20 and 25-22.
 
Carthage opened tournament play on Friday, March 16 with wins over Eastern Mennonite University (8-10) and No. 5 New York University (16-5), both by 3-0 scores.  The Red Men's winning set scores over the Royals were 25-18, 25-21 and 25-23, and their winning scores over the Violets were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22.  The Red Men defeated No. 8 Nazareth College (20-7), 3-0, on Saturday, March 17 with winning scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20.
  
In non-Carthage tournament matches, New York (16-4) swept Eastern Mennonite (8-11), 3-0, on Friday. Fontbonne University (2-18) defeated Rust College, 3-0, on Saturday, Elmira (17-11) swept Rust, 3-0, on Saturday before outlasting Thiel College (13-13), 3-2, also on Saturday. Thiel (14-13) swept Rust, 3-0, in Saturday's final match.

Tournament Match Notes:  In the Eastern Mennonite match, Carthage's Randy Hansen (Sr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had a match-high 13 kills with a .435 attack percentage, a block solo and two block assists, while Pat Barry (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had eight kills and hit. 400 with seven block assists.  Tyler Frings (Sr., Hubertus, Wis./Milwaukee-Pius XI) added six kills with five block assists.  Chris Moise topped Eastern Mennonite with 10 kills.…in the New York match, Hansen had 13 kills and hit .333, while Barry had 12 kills with a .310 mark.  Setter Connor Wexter (So., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 11.67 assists per set in the NYU contest.  Taylor Fauntlerory led the Violets with 13 kills…in the Nazareth contest, Hansen had 15 kills with a .500 attack percentage, while Barry had 15 kills and hit. 407. Matt Yanz (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) added seven kills, and Wexter averaged 14.67 assists per set. Luke Lawatsch led Nazareth with 14 kills and a .571 attack percentage…in Carthage's win over Juniata, the Red Men broke open the first set at 14-11 with an 8-2 run to take a 22-13 lead.  The second set was tied at 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25 before the Eagles took the final two points for a 27-25 decision.  Carthage was leading set three, 18-16, before closing things out with a 7-4 run to win by five, 25-20.  The fourth-and-final set was tied at 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 before Carthage took four of the last five points for a 25-22 win.  Hansen had a match-high 20 kills with a .488 attack percentage.  Barry had 18 kills and hit .200, while Frings added 10 kills with a .444 attack percentage and four block assists.  Wexter averaged 12.75 assists per set.  Joe Bortak led Juniata with 13 kills and a .522 hitting percentage, while Ben Wolff had 12 kills with a .423 mark.

Carthage plays host to Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne on Saturday, March 24 in a 7 p.m. match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
