Juniata’s Bortak named CVC Freshman of the Year

Milwaukee-- Juniata College’s 6-7 middle hitter Joe Bortak (Jeanette, Pa.) has been named the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Freshman of the Year. In eight conference matches, Bortak had 65 kills, averaging 2.83 kills per set and also a .604 hitting percentage.  He was also the CVC Player of the Week and the AVCA National Player of the week, ending Feb. 26, 2012. Bortak led his team to a 3-1 record, including a three-set victory over #2 Springfield College where he hit .778 with 14 kills on 18 attempts and no hitting errors.

For the season, Bortak hit .487 (309-53-526) and averaged 2.36 kills per set and had 120 total blocks, a 0.92 blocks per set average. He also averaged 2.9 points per set in 2012.

Juniata head coach Kevin Moore knew he had a special player.

“After one of our first practices, Joe (Bortak) sent our setter a text asking what he had to do to get more sets,” Moore said. “At that moment, I knew we had someone special here.”

Bortak and Juniata continue play in the ECAC South tourney, to be held Saturday, April 21, at Stevenson University.
